Webbed fingers or toes is also known as Syndactyly and is a common congenital abnormality of the hand or foot. It occurs when two or more of the fingers or toes are connected together by skin or tissue. Sometimes the bones of the fingers/toes may also be fused.
Webbed fingers/toes occur during the development stages of a baby in the womb. At approximately seven weeks of development the hand/foot ‘bud’ divides to form the individual fingers/toes. In most cases the fingers fail to separate due to a genetic cause, but it can also be due to a disruption of the development of the healthy embryo due to exposure to toxins. Sometimes the cause of the this is unknown, but it can affect 1 in 2000 people.
