What Is Hair Density Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

If you are experiencing thinning hair, also described as diffused hair loss, it can be a constant cause for concern. Our Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatments offer a naturally effective solution; creating the illusion of thicker fuller hair and camouflaging the scalp skin to diffuse light.

Our specialists implant pigment in the areas of low density or thinning hair to emulate the thicker areas and give the illusion of consistent density throughout the whole scalp. Careful implantation ensures undetectable pigment to restore your hair confidence.

Density treatments are suitable for both men and women affected by thinning hair to all areas of the scalp. We treat every patient as an individual case and work with all types of hair loss for this treatment. The potential is evident, and we’d love to work with you to restore your confidence with a density SMP treatment.

SMP For Density: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Get SMP Without Shaving My Hair?

Whether it is recommended to shave your hair or not will depend on the type of treatment you are looking for and what we can achieve with your existing hair. For example, if you are looking for density boosting treatments and have sufficient hair to ‘add’ density to then no you do not need to shave your hair. If you are looking to lower, re-define or augment a hair line then the hair must be worn shaven for a natural result. If we can work with the hair you have at your desired length then we will do so, if however, we feel that the only way to achieve a natural result is for the hair to be worn at shaved length then we will advise this at the consultation stage and discuss all options with you.

How Long Does Scalp Micropigmentation Last?

There are two types of pigment used to perform SMP, one which is shorter term and one which is longer lasting. The pigment for both remains in the skin indefinitely but the colour fades and changes over time.

Shorter term pigments last an average of 9-12 months before it needs a colour refresh or ‘top-up’ and will become increasingly less visible over a period of time. Longer lasting pigments require a ‘top-up’ on average every 2-5 years. The reason for the varying time is down to differing skin types (oily/dry) and how these respond to environmental and individual factors such as exposure to UV and/or sun damage, age, products used upon the area and your general health.

Who Should Not Get Scalp Micropigmentation?

While scalp micropigmentation can be a great option for many people, there are some individuals who should not undergo the procedure due to potential risks and complications.

Here are the main groups who should avoid scalp micropigmentation:

1. Individuals with certain skin conditions: Scalp acne or other inflammatory conditions: If you're experiencing an active breakout or flare-up of scalp conditions like psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis, the procedure can be problematic. The inflamed and irritated scalp makes pigment application difficult and increases the risk of infection.

Keloid scarring: People prone to developing keloids, raised and excessive scar tissue, are at higher risk of experiencing this issue after scalp micropigmentation.

2. Individuals with allergies: Skin allergies: If you have a history of allergic reactions to pigments, cosmetics, or topical medications, there's a chance you might be allergic to the pigments used in scalp micropigmentation. Discussing your allergy history with a qualified practitioner is crucial.

3. Individuals with certain medical conditions:

Bleeding disorders: If you have a blood clotting disorder or take blood thinners, scalp micropigmentation carries an increased risk of bleeding during and after the procedure.

Autoimmune diseases: Certain autoimmune conditions can affect wound healing and increase the risk of infection, making scalp micropigmentation potentially risky.

Does SMP Turn Blue?

When the pigment is implanted correctly, with the correct colour tone used and aftercare followed, the risk of dis-colouration is minimal. As with all pigment implanted into the skin it is subject to external factors which will affect the pigment over time. The ‘blue’ tone typically associated with SMP is thankfully seen less and less, thanks to the evolution of materials used and also to enhanced educational and implantation protocols. We will ensure we work with you to determine the correct colour for you to achieve the most natural result possible.
